In a match that was heavily impacted by two days of relentless rain, Super Seniors FC managed to edge past Moanungsang Memorial Sporting Club (MMSC) through a penalty shootout in the third quarterfinal match of the MDFA Trophy 2024 at Imkongmeren Sports Complex on Thursday. Despite the much-anticipated clash, the sludge and muddy field conditions made it difficult for the players to perform at their best. Throughout the first half, both teams struggled to gain momentum as passes were frequently misplaced due to the poor playing conditions and clear-cut chances remained elusive. The first half ended goalless, with neither side able to capitalize on the few opportunities created.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with the weather continuing to hinder play. Both Super Seniors FC and MMSC came close to scoring, but crucial goal-line clearances kept the game level. Super Seniors FC thought they had broken the deadlock in injury time, only for the goal to be ruled offside, extending the frustration for their supporters.
With the match still tied at 0-0, the game proceeded into revised extra time of 5 minutes for each half, which saw no further breakthroughs. The contest then shifted to penalties, where Super Seniors FC showcased their composure and experience. All four penalty takers for Super Seniors—Keviesalie, Chuba Imchen, Olando, and Nyithung—converted their spot kicks. Nyithung sealed the victory with the winning spot-kick after MMSC had faltered.
MMSC’s Tenurepba was the first to take a penalty but saw his shot saved by Super Seniors FC goalkeeper Nungsangyanger, who proved to be the standout player of the shootout. Although Imnawapang and Meyasenba successfully converted their penalties for MMSC, Ayimnekshi’s crucial fourth penalty was also saved by Nungsangyanger, setting up Nyithung to finish the job and send Super Seniors FC through with a 4-2 win on penalties.
Nungsangyanger’s two decisive saves were instrumental in securing the victory for Super Seniors FC. MMSC, despite their rich history as MDFA champions in 2006 and 2007 and finalists in 2022 and 2023, could not overcome the pressure of the shootout.
Super Seniors FC now turn their attention to the semi-finals, where they will face either reigning champions Telongjem FC or Eastern Wings.
