The Mokokchung Municipal Council is planning to relocate the meat stalls presently located at Alongmen ward of Mokokchung town, along NH-02. The proposal is being put into effect in order to ease traffic congestion, check unhygienic ambience and other related issues caused by the meat stalls line.

The Core Development Committee (CDC) of Mokokchung Municipal Council had unanimously decided to move the meat stalls to the Old Town Hall Market, which can accommodate all the stalls, as per a decision passed at a meeting held on February 25, 2022.

According to a report acquired from the MMC’s office, this began with a proposal from the All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT) outlining issues of traffic congestion, unsanitary environment, and other associated inconveniences created by the Meat Stall Line, Alongmen Ward on National Highway-02.

Furthermore, the AWUMT, in consultation with all the ward representatives, presented a representation for the relocation of the aforementioned meat stall line.

Following this, on February 25, 2022, a Core Development Committee (CDC) meeting was conducted at the MMC conference hall where the decision to shift the meat stalls to the Old Town Hall building was accepted. Administrator of MMC is also the chairman of CDC.

Additionally, the members agreed to build a retaining/protection wall for safety as well as extension purpose where additional stalls/warehouses might be built if the need arises in the future.

This development is being pursued under the 15th Finance Commission Untied Grant within the authority of Mokokchung Municipal Council, Mokokchung Times has learnt.

The vendors in the Old Town Hall market will now be relocated to the newly constructed storefronts at the MMC Complex basement, according to members of the Core Development Committee.

When Mokokchung Times visited the Old Town Hall market, vendor stalls there were found to be vacant and development in the MMC basement were found to be near completed.

However, MMC sources informed that formalities will be completed after a high-level meeting scheduled to be held next week with the AWUMT, appropriate ward representatives, the Butchers Union, and the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).

Meanwhile, according to Chuchamo Humtsoe, ADC Mokokchung and Administrator MMC, all concerned residents should prevent selling meat on the roadside since it is not only unhygienic but also violates the ambience of the roadside.

He also stated that it is past time for Mokokchung to have an enclosed, regulated meat market where law and order can be enforced and rate uniformity can be maintained.
