Dimapur, 20 September: The Department of English, MGM College, organised a Slam Poetry Competition under the theme “Poetry in Motion: Voices That Inspire” at the college auditorium on September 19. The literary activity aimed to encourage creativity, self-expression, confidence and appreciation of poetry among students.
The programme was chaired by Thejavor Jordan Mepfuo of the Department of English, BA First Semester, and commenced with an opening cadence by Head of the Department of English Ahikali I. Jakha.
Guest of Honour Reji Abraham, Principal, MGM Higher Secondary School, highlighted the role of literature and poetry in nurturing creativity, imagination, critical thinking and effective self-expression among young learners. He encouraged students to use literary platforms to articulate their thoughts, experiences, aspirations and perspectives.
The slam poetry competition saw enthusiastic participation, with students presenting original works reflecting diverse perspectives and contemporary concerns. The winners were Narion L. Khuvung, first prize; Ethungbeni, second prize; and Joimie Angpuh, third prize.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Christine Murry, Assistant Professor, Department of English. She expressed appreciation to the guest of honour, faculty members, students and participants for contributing to the event.
The competition provided students a platform to engage with poetry beyond the classroom and express themselves with confidence and creativity.
