US Ambassador in India, Eric Michael Garcetti, who was recently in Nagaland to attend the Hornbill Festival, has expressed his love for the state evident in his tweets on X and media interactions.

Notably, he rated the Hornbill Festival as the “best cultural event” he has attended. Garcetti also shared optimism about collaborating on environmentally sensitive infrastructure development, emphasizing America’s commitment to work with the Indian Government. He also looked forward to returning to Nagaland to explore collaboration opportunities in education, economic development, cultural exchange, sports, health, and more.

While Nagaland received praise, people from Mizoram, Meghalaya, and other northeastern Indian states have invited the Ambassador to visit their states through tweets. However, there have been netizens leaving comments on Garcetti’s tweets expressing cynicism about his visit.

A user on X (formerly Twitter) made deriding suggestions to the Ambassador to engage with Christian missionaries, alluding to the history of how American missionaries converted the Nagas to Christianity. “Meet the Christian missionaries there…talk to them…ask them what more help they need to convert trees, birds, animals,” the user tweeted.

Another user voiced concerns about potential diplomatic complications, urging clarification from Indian authorities adding that US diplomats are known to “fish in troubled waters.”

Meanwhile, another user deemed the ambassador ‘dangerous’, hinting that something was ‘fishy’ and predicting that “something would happen in the northeast or Nagaland.” Another X user accused the Ambassador of funding the “separatist movement” in states like Nagaland, which all reflects the skepticism some Indians harbor towards US foreign policy.

However, this isn’t the first time Garcetti has faced irked comments from netizens. He previously provoked the ire of some Indians due to comments he made. During Garcetti’s confirmation hearings in 2021, he pledged to “actively raise” human rights issues in New Delhi in response to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) passed by the Modi Government.

This resulted in the World Hindu Council of America (WHCA) campaigning against his nomination stating that he has “very poor understanding of India.” But despite the protest, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government welcomed the confirmation.

Garcetti assumed the role of US Ambassador to India on 15 March 2023. Serving as Los Angeles’ 42nd mayor from 2013 to 2022, he was elected as a member of the Democratic Party in 2013 and re-elected in 2017.

Until about five years ago, Garcetti, a dedicated Joe Biden supporter, was considered one of the Democratic Party’s young talents. However, the final years of his nine-year mayorship were marred by scandals, costing him a position in Biden’s cabinet and nearly derailing his ambassadorial bid.

Despite the US Senate confirming Garcetti’s appointment 20 months after President Joe Biden nominated him, the confirmation faced delays due to concerns about how he responded to allegations against his friend and once-adviser, Rick Jacobs, accused of sexual harassment during Garcetti’s tenure at City Hall.
