Imlisanen Jamir and Lanuakum officially declared their candidacies for the upcoming Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) election for Mongsenbai ward and Salangtem ward respectively at their residences today. Both candidates will be standing under the banner of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).
Jamir while declaring his candidacy highlighted his zeal for doing well for society. Jamir stated that he had the interest to serve the people from a very young age and has been preparing for the ULB election since 2016.
“If elected, firstly, I will work hand in hand with the ward authority, and whatever development it may be, I will work with full transparency,” he said. He appealed for the support of the people and shared that his vision is to do good for the people of Mongsenbai Ward.
He also expressed his gratitude to the NDPP for allowing him to contest the election on its ticket.
Lanuakum also formally declared his candidature for Salangtem ward today at his residence. Lanuakum stated that his interest in participating in the ULB election peaked after learning that Salangtem Ward would be under the ‘open category’. He expressed his gratitude to the NDPP for giving him the opportunity to participate in the ULB election with its ticket.
Stating that the Municipal Act has been implemented for the entire state of Nagaland, he mentioned that there are many sections in the Act and clarified that the entire Act would not be implemented in Mokokchung, adding that only some sections might be applicable to Mokokchung Town.
In his speech, he stated, “The burning issue in Mokokchung Town is, from September onwards, there will be no dumping site for the garbage,” noting that it is one of the biggest problems for the people of Mokokchung Town.
He further added that for an Urban Local Body, it is a priority to solve this issue. With his experience of being in the All Ward Union for 10 years, he shared his thoughts on solving the issue by working with the rest of the 17 wards’ representatives and doing good work for the upliftment of Mokokchung Town. He pleaded for the people’s support and vowed to help them to the best of his capacity if elected.
Mayangnungba, President of the Mokokchung Region NDPP, addressed both the gatherings. He stated that the ULB election is confined to the wards within the town, excluding religion and villages.
Stating that the NDPP as the ruling party in the state government is ready to help, he noted that wards represented by other parties in the MMC might face challenges.
“They will be MMC members and ULB members, receiving only a sitting allowance, which is not guaranteed, as the Act does not mention salary or sitting allowance. The treasury bench will manage the development funds,” he said, urging the residents to plan ahead and encouraged them to elect the NDPP candidates.
He also spoke of the NDPP’s commitment to its manifesto, particularly in youth and women’s empowerment, which has provided numerous opportunities for both groups as outlined in their previous manifestos.
