3R Centre – Global Recycling Day
ADC & Administrator of MMC said that, when it comes to management of waste, the 3Rs is the most important step. The 3Rs stands for Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. These three letters are pivotal in the management of waste and help to combat climate change, he said.
“Reduce means to lessen the amount of waste produced. Reuse means to use something again, either use it for its original purpose or repurpose it for a different purpose. Recycle means conversion of waste material into a brand new item or the remaking of that particular item,” he explained.
He said that the 3Rs, if followed in the right order,” will be the most effective to fight against the global war against waste and greenhouse gas emissions.”
“Our first step is to consciously reduce our consumption, that way our waste will noticeably reduce. Next step is for us to consider reusing it before throwing away the waste. And only if we cannot reduce or reuse should we consider recycling it and when the waste cannot undergo any of the 3Rs it should be submitted for incineration or taken to landfill sites,” he said.
He further said that Mokokchung’s fight against waste and climate change continues and that, together with the global Recycling Day celebration on 18 March 2024, MMC have organized a permanent 3R Centre at MMC complex which will begin on 18 March. As it has been practiced in the 2023 3R Centre, the people of Mokokchung can submit their discarded items to the 3R Centre and individuals can take any of the items from the 3R Centre without any charges, it was informed.
