Mohun Bagan Super Giant capped off a historic Indian Super League (ISL) season by clinching the ISL Cup with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bengaluru FC in the final held at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.
The win completed a prestigious double for the Mariners, who had already lifted the League Winners’ Shield earlier in the season.
Despite falling behind early in the second half due to an own goal by defender Alberto Rodriguez, Mohun Bagan staged a remarkable comeback. Bengaluru had dominated the opening 60 minutes, but the tide turned after Jason Cummings calmly converted a 72nd-minute penalty, awarded following a handball by Chinglensana Singh. With the match tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, extra time ensued.
In the 96th minute, Jamie Maclaren scored the match-winning goal, sending the home crowd into raptures. His precise strike from inside the box beat Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and sealed the ISL Cup for Mohun Bagan.
The win makes Mohun Bagan only the second team in ISL history to achieve the league-cup double, a feat previously accomplished by Mumbai City FC in the 2020–21 season. Mohun Bagan topped the league table with 56 points from 24 matches, securing qualification for the AFC Champions League 2 in the process.
The final began with high intensity as both teams exchanged early chances. Maclaren and Anirudh Thapa came close for MBSG, while Sunil Chhetri and Edgar Mendez tested Vishal Kaith at the other end.
Bengaluru finally found the net in the 49th minute, albeit through an own goal, before Mohun Bagan rallied through Cummings and Maclaren.
