Mokokchung enthusiastically joined the global community in celebrating World Environment Day, with a range of programs aimed at raising awareness about environmental conservation and promoting sustainable practices. From a Walkathon cum Cyclothon to tree-planting initiatives and cleanliness drives, the residents of Mokokchung actively engaged in activities to protect and preserve their natural surroundings.

 

The day commenced with a Walkathon cum Cyclothon organized by the National Program on Climate Change and Human Health (NPCCHH) under the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Mokokchung. With the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution,” the event was flagged off by Dr Kibangkumba, Chief Medical Officer of Mokokchung. A short awareness program was also conducted, facilitated by Dr Limanaro, DPO (NCD). The event saw participation from various organizations including the Naga Students Clean Federation (NSCF), Run Mokokchung, MTBA Youth Ministry, Christ Church, cyclists from ‘The Gear Thrills,’ and staff from the office of the Chief Medical Officer, Mokokchung.

 

Several schools in Mokokchung actively participated in cleanliness drives held across various locations in the town. Equipped with gloves and garbage bags, volunteers and students took on the task of cleaning streets and other public areas, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

 

One of the highlights of the day was a special program held at Longkotsung, Mokokchung Village, under the theme “Rejuvenation of Springs and Water Bodies.” The program, organized by the Mokokchung District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) in collaboration with the departments of Forest, Rural Development, Water Resources, Soil and Water Conservation, Land Resources, and Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), aimed to emphasize the importance of revitalizing and preserving springs and water bodies in the district.

 

Furthermore, the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) organized a program to mark the significance of the day and conclude the “Meri Life Mera Swachh Shehar” campaign. The MMC, under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, crowned Salangtem Ward as the Best RRR (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) Center among the participating wards. Earlier in the program, Dr Sentitula IFS, DFO Mokokchung delivered a talk on the significance of ‘World Environment Day’ while Limanungsang, President AWUM and other members gave highlights of the RRR experience.

 

Educational institutions and various organizations throughout the Mokokchung district also organized a series of programs. Experts in the field of environmental conservation and sustainable development shared their knowledge and insights with students, teachers, and community members, fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of environmental stewardship.

 

The diverse range of activities held in Mokokchung on World Environment Day exemplified the community’s commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable practices. The collective efforts of the community contributed to a meaningful and impactful celebration, creating awareness and inspiring positive change for a greener and healthier future.

The Asetkong Kaketshir Telongjem Mungdang (AKTM) observed World Environment Day at Yimchalu village under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ as part of Greening Asetkong Project which was initiated by former MLA, Late Dr Imtiwapang Aier, which has now been as Late Dr Imtiwapang Aier Memorial Greening Asetkong Project , Yimchalu village council chairman C Wati Walling stated. He also encouraged the Asetkong Students’ Conference to focus on beautification and conservation of nature in Asetkong under the project that was initiated and sponsored by the Late Dr Imtiwapang Aier MLA 23 Impur A/C.

GMS Yimyu Mokokchung celebrated WED with one of the teachers delivering a speech emphasizing the importance of WED during the morning assembly. 30 volunteer students actively participated in an event where they exchanged tree saplings while 34 elementary students participated in an essay competition on the topic “Plastics: “Friend and Foe”. All students participated in slogan and pledge-taking activities by collectively raising the slogan, “1, 2, 3 – Let’s plant a tree”. A total of 124 students participated in the event.

To commemorate the World environment day, the NDPP, Youth Organisation, Mokokchung Region, planted more than 50 ornamental tree saplings at the Astro Turf, Rempukong, Ungma village, under the presidentship of Bendangzenba.

District Youth Congress, Mokokchung observed the World Environment Day 2023 on 5 June by planting tree saplings around the vicinity of Amoklushi Lake in Chuchuyimpang village, the biggest natural water body in Mokokchung district.

The Amenty Welfare Educational Society, in collaboration with the Longjang Baptist Arogo Youth Ministry, organized a special event at Longjang Baptist Church to celebrate World Environment Day under the theme ‘Süngdong Wazuka Yudi’. The aim was to foster a sense of responsibility among Christians as caretakers of God’s creation. The event commenced with a formal program held at the Reverend Yaongsangba Memorial Hall. Following the program, a tree plantation drive took place in and around the church premises, symbolizing the commitment of the participants to a greener future. Approximately 300 tree saplings were planted, covering a distance of 5 kilometers along the roads.

Clark Memorial Higher Secondary School, Impur, celebrated World Environment Day at the school auditorium under the theme “Solution to Plastic Pollution”. The school organized a Tableau competition, fancy dress competition, and speech competition centered on the theme. “Additionally, the school planted 40 mango saplings (Hybrid) which they received as donations from a sponsoring society.

Government Middle School Marepkong, Mokokchung observed World Environment Day with a focus on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The students engaged in various activities including tree planting, collecting plastic and paper waste, and cleaning the water reservoir.

The Senayangba GHSS Ungma celebrated World Environment Day on June 5, 2023, with a focus on the theme “Solutions to Plastic Pollution.” The program was chaired by Limasangla, a teacher at Senayangba GHSS Ungma. Mrs Akumnaro delivered a short speech emphasizing the significance of the day’s theme and encouraged the students to practice avoiding single-use plastic. The school also organized a poster making competition and distributed trees saplings to neighborhood schools and in and around the school campus.
