The Inter-District Taekwondo Championship in Phek District, scheduled for September 2 and 3 has seen remarkable performances from the Mokokchung contingent. Out of 33 participants, 16 Mokokchung players competed today, though one had to withdraw due to illness.
Among the 16 who competed, 7 of them secured medals. Sangponger claimed gold in the Junior Boys’ over 78 kg category, and Odimeren won gold in the Cadet Boys’ under 65 kg category.
Silver medals were awarded to Akumienla in the Senior Girls under 46 kg, Phamsa in the Senior Girls under 49 kg, Mongshai in the Sub-Junior Girls under 22 kg, and Lungli in the Sub-Junior Boys under 23 kg. Thangjemhaubou earned a bronze medal in the Sub-Junior Boys’ under 21 kg category.
16 more Mokokchung students are set to compete tomorrow, with expectations for at least two more medals, according to the team manager.
State govt mobilizing resources for infrastructure, says Kenye
Nagaland Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye said today that the state government is working to mobilize resources for basic infrastructure to enable athletes to compete effectively.
He made these remarks during the inaugural ceremony of the 34th Nagaland State Taekwondo Championship 2024, organized by the Nagaland Taekwondo Association in partnership with the State Department of Youth Resources and Sports in Phek Town.
The Minister in his speech also highlighted the significant potential of Naga youth in the sports sector.
