On a momentous day for Mokokchung, transformative milestones were achieved in education with the inauguration of a coaching center and the unveiling of a new college campus on Monday.

Shisalen Riju, a pioneering coaching institute offering free classes with a special focus on NPSC and NSSB exams, was officially launched at Tzusapang sector. Concurrently, Advisor Imkong L Imchen laid the foundation stone for the new campus of People’s College Mokokchung at Mongsenbai Ward.

Shisalen Riju stands as an initiative led by the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB), Mokokchung, sponsored through the common pool under LADP. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Metsubo Jamir, Minister of RD and SIRD, alongside distinguished guests.

It can be observed that the dual inauguration promises a dedicated commitment to fostering educational advancement and cultivating human resources in Mokokchung.

The foundation stone for the new campus of People’s College Mokokchung was laid by Advisor for IPR & Soil and Water Conservation, Imkong L Imchen, who graced the occasion as the special guest at Mongsenbai Ward, Mokokchung. The ceremony witnessed the unveiling of the foundation stone plaque in the presence of NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, Minister Metsubo Jamir, and Advisor Tongpang Ozukum. The dedicatory prayer was offered by Dr R Zulu, Associate Pastor Kumlong Baptist Church.

In his address, Advisor Imchen reflected on the history of the college and recalled that it was an outcome of a resolution passed by the AKM during its golden jubilee conference in Longkhum in 1979, when he was also its vice president. He recalled how it was established as an evening college in 1984 consequently.

He also acknowledged the contributions of NI Jamir to Naga society, especially in the field of education, and lauded the Late NI Jamir’s family for their commitment to the college’s mission, emphasizing their focus on providing educational benefits to the community rather than turning it into a profit-driven institution. People’s College was formerly managed by Alemtemshi Jamir, former Chief Secretary, Government of Nagaland, and the new management will be taken over by Metsübo Jamir and his family.

Imchen commended the new management for their broad vision for the college and the district, urging them to prioritize the incorporation of academic technologies to ensure the delivery of quality education within Mokokchung. He further urged the College Management to maintain a progressive standard, making People’s College not only a local educational hub but also an attractive destination for students from other districts.

Addressing the gathering on behalf of the new management of People’s College, Metsubo Jamir said that the true meaning of development is not only infrastructure development but more importantly, the development of the people that are to use, maintain, and sustain them. Jamir stated that the true essence of development goes beyond infrastructure to encompass the development of human resources.

“Roads, electricity, buildings are important but today is a day dedicated to something much more important – developing the human resource of Mokokchung,” he said. Empowering people with knowledge will not only develop Mokokchung or Nagaland but will also contribute to the nation, he said.

In tribute to his late father NI Jamir’s educational vision for the people, Jamir announced the management’s five-year plan to transform the college into a model institution, attracting students from beyond the district for quality education. He assured that the college, under the new management, would adopt an innovative system and provide opportunities for free education to underprivileged students.

“Our family is also ready to single-handedly focus on this area as we have invested in a school and are investing to revive the pioneer private college in Mokokchung,” he said. “Following my late father NI Jamir’s legacy of his desire to educate the people, we as his family take on the responsibility to make sure that his visions are fulfilled,” he added.

Jamir concluded by stating that the reputation of the college hinges on the dedication of the teaching faculty, the efficacy of the management board, and, most importantly, the students, and sought the support of all stakeholders.

The program was chaired by Dr T Amongla, Principal, People’s College, and the vote of thanks was pronounced by Amongla, Vice Principal, People’s College.

Short speeches were delivered by Imtidongba Jamir, Aola, Tatar, Kosasanger Pusu Ungma, and Marnungsang Chairman, Mongsenbai ward, while the People’s College Students’ Union presented a special number.

About People’s College

Established in 1984, People’s College Mokokchung has its beginnings on the premises of Government High School Dilong, offering evening classes to cater to the growing number employed adult students whose work schedule prevented them from attending day classes. The students then were voluntarily taught by professors from FAC.

The college then shifted its base to the present day campus, located in the heart of Mokokchung town at Kumlong Ward. Backed by a group of dedicated well-wishers through their contributions and donations, People’s College established itself as a full-fledged college moving on from what was then called a “night college” and opening its doors to full-time students. In 1996, the Nagaland University granted the college the degree provisional affiliation facilitating major degrees in all departments under the humanities. At present, the college is awaiting accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in line with the college’s aim to establish itself as a centre of academic excellence.

Metsubo Jamir, Minister of RD and SIRD, officially inaugurated the institute in the presence of NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, Advisor Imkong L Imchen, Advisor Tongpang Ozukum, Advisor TN Manen, and district administration officials.

Addressing the gathering, he expressed his joy over this remarkable initiative by DPDB, Mokokchung, emphasizing the shared responsibility of all stakeholders to achieve the vision. Unlike other coaching institutions, he envisioned this institute to be objective-oriented, proving to be a boon for all NPSC and NSSB aspirants, adding that this is the first free coaching center among the districts in the state initiated by a DPDB.

Acknowledging the differences in NSSB and NPSC subject matters, he advised teachers to stay updated and well-equipped in their respective fields of teaching. Additionally, he encouraged aspiring students to cultivate a positive attitude, understand the value of life, and view failures as stepping stones to success.

Tongpang Ozukum, Advisor for Water Resources and Chairman DPDB, mentioned that Shisalen Riju was established with the unanimous decision of all 10 MLAs representing Mokokchung district, approved during the DPDB meeting on 13 July 2023. This noble venture aims to provide professional academic and experiential guidance to aspirants genuinely seeking a career through competitive examinations. Ozukum expressed gratitude to colleagues for their support, concern, and commitment to empowering the younger generation.

The free coaching institute will be sponsored through the common pool under LADP until 2028, and eligible candidates must be bona fide domiciles of Mokokchung District from any Naga tribe, Ozukum informed, while expressing hope that future elected officials will sustain the coaching center.

The program, chaired by P Tiatemsu, Asst. Prof, FAC, and member of the Shisalen Riju Management Committee, featured a welcome address by ADC and Convenor of the Shisalen Riju Management Committee, Chumlamo Humtsoe. Short speeches were delivered by the Mokokchung Village Council Chairman and Rev Dr Prof Mar Pongener, Executive Secretary, ABAM. Dr Sentitula IFS, DFO, Mokokchung proposed the vote of thanks, while Rev W Supong, Pastor, Tzusapang Baptist Church, offered the dedicatory prayer.
