Mokokchung, 9 July (MTNews): With the increasing urgency to address the devastating impact of anthropogenic processes on ecosystems, resources, and global climate change, the importance of Environmental Humanities has risen to the forefront. Recognizing the need for a multidisciplinary approach to tackle these challenges, the Department of English and the Department of Geography at Fazl Ali College, in collaboration with the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE India) and Lemsachenlok Longleng, are poised to host an international conference on ‘Environmental Humanities in the Anthropocene Era: Ecojustice and Sustainability’ on the 4th and 5th of October 2023. The seminar will be sponsored by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Fazl Ali College.

Under the patronage of Prof Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, Lumami, and LH Thangi Mannen, retired Nagaland Commissioner and Secretary and Vice Chairperson of FST (Foundation for Social Transformation) and member of FCAPP (Foundation for Campaign Against Plastic Pollution), the conference promises to be an exceptional gathering of leading minds.

Prof Murali Sivaramakrishnan, Founder & President of ASLE India and Former Head of the Department of English at Pondicherry University, will serve as the keynote speaker, lending his expertise and insights to the event.

The Anthropocene Era, characterized by significant human activities altering Earth’s ecosystems and geology, necessitates a comprehensive reevaluation of the relationship between humans and the environment. The depletion, pollution, and exploitation of resources demand a shift toward a more inclusive and holistic methodology. Environmental Humanities aims to integrate discussions on environmental philosophy, history, Ecocriticism, cultural geography, anthropology, and political ecology from various disciplinary contexts, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the complex challenges we face. By embracing multidisciplinary methodologies and approaches, the conference seeks to explore innovative solutions to achieve ecojustice and sustainability while considering the positive and negative interferences of human activities.

Renowned speakers from around the world will be sharing their expertise at the conference. Among them are Nuklu Phom, Team Leader of Lemsachenlok Longleng and winner of the prestigious Green Oscar by the Whitley Fund for Nature (UK) in 2021. Dr Pankaj Thapa, a freelance researcher and former faculty member in the Department of Geography & Planning at Sherubtse College, Royal University of Bhutan, will also be speaking.

Dr Abdul Hannan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at Sikkim University, will contribute his insights, alongside Mihai A Stroe from the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, English Department at the University of Bucharest, Romania.
