Majakong Ward pipped neighbors Lijaba Lijen by a solitary goal while Sangtemla Ward humbled Yimyu Ward by 4 goals on the second day of the ongoing Mokokchung Inter Ward Football Tournament 2023 at Imkongmeren Sports Complex on Tuesday.
In the first match of the day, Watitemsu of Majakong Ward donning jersey number 17 scored the lone goal of the tightly contested Pool C match in the 14th minute. Lijaba Lijen will next play Kumlong Ward on 13 April the outcome of which will decide their fate in the tournament. Majakong Ward will also face Kumlong Ward on 15 April. There are only three teams in Pool C and Majakong Ward with today’s win is poised to qualify for the next round although it is mathematically possible for the other two teams to qualify at Majakong’s expense although that scenario is quite unlikely.
Meanwhile, Sangtemla Ward got the better of a weaker Yimyu side as braces by Opangtemjen and Meyasenba ensured a convincing win for the town’s hilltop outfit. Opangtemjen scored both of his goals in the first half while Meyasenba scored the first of his brace in the dying minutes before half time.
The match remained in stalemate till the 25th minute but Sangtemla managed to find the back of the net three times in the next 6 minutes before the break. Opangtemjen scored his first goal in the 25th minute and added his second five minutes later while Meyasenba joined the party to score his first goal in the injury time of the first half. He went on to score his second goal, and his team’s fourth, in the 60th minute of the match.
Sangtemla Ward will next face Tongdentsuyong Ward on 13 April, the third of three teams in Pool D. Yimyu plays Tongdentsuyong Ward on 15 April in what will be the last match in the group stages of the tournament.
