Sangtemla Ward and Sungkomen Ward booked their places in the semifinals of the 6th Mokokchung Inter Ward Football Tournament 2025 after winning their respective quarterfinal clashes at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung on Tuesday.

In a high-stakes encounter between two former champions, Sangtemla edged past Artang Ward in a tense penalty shootout after the match ended goalless in regulation time. With the 2021 champions Artang now out of the race, the 2023 winners Sangtemla are just two matches away from reclaiming the title.
Sangtemla made no mistakes in the tiebreaker, as all five designated penalty takers—Molutsupong, Bapen, captain Nungshisashi, Opangtemjen, and Meyasenba—converted their spot-kicks with precision. Artang, led by captain Tongpang Lemtur, found the net through Chuba Imchen and Chubalemba, but their fourth kicker, Yashimeren, fired wide, sealing their fate. Sangtemla won 5-3 in the shootout and will now face Sungkomen in the semifinals.

In the fourth quarterfinal, Sungkomen staged a thrilling comeback to defeat Kumlong Ward 2-1. Medemshiba gave Kumlong the lead in the 36th minute, but Sungkomen’s defensive stalwart Takosungba surged forward to score the equalizer in the 49th minute. With momentum on their side, Sungkomen captain and tournament top scorer Tarepnungsang netted the winner just five minutes later, bringing his goal tally to five in three matches.
The semifinals are now set, with Mongsenbai, Dilong, Sangtemla, and Sungkomen making up the final four. Sangtemla remain the only former champions left in contention. They will look to lift the trophy on April 5, which would see them match Arkong Ward’s record, while the other three teams aim to make history by winning their maiden title.
