The Landowners’ Board (Lika), Mokokchung, comprising landowners from Ungma, Mokokchung, and Khensa villages, submitted an ultimatum to the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung on 19 September 2024 for the settlement of land issues in Mokokchung Town.
In the ultimatum, the Landowners’ Board reminded that it had submitted a representation to the DC to “furnish valid documentation and evidence of certain parties/individuals claiming acquisition of land from the British vide Letter No. L/GENERAL-013, dated 21-02-24.”
However, the Landowners’ Board stated that no evidence has been received to date. “It is pertinent at this juncture to settle these land issues for the infrastructure development of the Town,” the Landowners’ Board added.
“Much time has lapsed, and the Landowners’ Board is constrained to present this ultimatum that on or before 31 of October 2024, the competent authority should furnish all clear evidence, failing which the Landowners’ Board will take its own course of action governed by customary practices and traditional land holding system as deemed fit,” the Landowners’ Board stated.
It may be mentioned that the Landowners’ Board had earlier in February 2024 requested the Deputy Commissioner to provide documented evidence of the utilization of sanctioned funds, sale deeds, and details of transactions between the British and any parties or individuals regarding land sales or gifts.
“This is to settle any such claims from any party or individual that are currently in dispute or bound to occur in the future,” it added.
