The Mokokchung District Sports Council (MDSC) conducted a mass social work programme on June 13 at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex and its surrounding areas in Mokokchung.

The social work began at 6:30 am and saw participation from the 12 affiliated sports associations under the MDSC. Around 100 members, with 10 representatives from each association, took part in the cleanliness drive.

Participants cleaned various areas around the Public Ground and Multi Sports Complex, including clearing overgrown vegetation. Waste materials were segregated, with plastic bottles, glass bottles and other waste collected separately in disposable bags.

In collaboration with the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC), two waste collection trucks were deployed to collect and dispose of the waste.

Following the social work, the MDSC held a brief meeting during which members discussed ways to strengthen the council’s efforts to maintain cleanliness and protect the Public Ground and Multi Sports Complex area.

During the meeting, members expressed concern over increasing littering in and around the ground, including the disposal of alcohol bottles and plastic waste. They noted that the Imkongmeren Sports Complex is the only multi-sports facility in Mokokchung and stressed that the area should be preserved primarily for sporting activities, apart from official state programmes.

The council also recalled the standing order issued by the district administration last year regarding the opening and closing timings of the ground gates. Members maintained that the prescribed timings should be strictly followed and that activities other than sports should not be conducted within the ground premises beyond the permitted hours.

The MDSC resolved to strengthen its efforts to maintain the cleanliness and sanctity of the ground and appealed to the public to exercise civic responsibility by keeping the area clean.

The council stated that the social work marked the beginning of a broader initiative and that further efforts would be undertaken to improve and beautify the surroundings of the Public Ground.
