Nagaland’s recognition as a ‘LeaderAMP’ in the 5th edition of the States’ Startup Ranking Framework (SRF 5.0) is a welcome achievement. The state’s strengths in institutional support and market access highlight a growing ecosystem that nurtures innovation and entrepreneurship. This accolade reflects the broader momentum in the Northeast, with states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Meghalaya also gaining prominence for their startup initiatives.

However, while Nagaland as a whole is moving forward, it is important to critically assess the situation in Mokokchung district, which notably has no startups listed on the official Startup India portal. Out of 109 startups registered in Nagaland, most come from Kohima, Dimapur, and Chumoukedima, with smaller contributions from districts like Phek, Tuensang, Longleng, Peren, Wokha, and Meluri. Mokokchung’s absence from this list is a cause for concern.

This gap calls for serious reflection on the local startup environment. Mokokchung must ask why it has lagged behind and identify the barriers preventing local innovators and entrepreneurs from emerging and registering their ventures. Without active efforts to encourage a vibrant startup ecosystem, the district risks falling further behind as the rest of the state advances.

Local leaders, institutions, and the business community in Mokokchung must come together to create the right conditions for startups to flourish. This includes improving access to funding, mentorship, infrastructure, and market linkages. Encouraging youth innovation and providing targeted support can unlock the district’s potential and ensure it contributes meaningfully to Nagaland’s startup growth.

Nagaland’s progress is promising, but inclusive growth requires every district, including Mokokchung, to awaken from its slumber and join the journey towards a dynamic entrepreneurial future. There is plenty of talk about promoting entrepreneurship in Mokokchung but very little or no action on the ground. It is time for the community to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to build an enabling environment for startups. Only then can Mokokchung hope to contribute meaningfully to Nagaland’s growing startup ecosystem and unlock its full potential.
