Nagaland University celebrated Mother Language Day 2026 on February 21 at the Conference Hall of the Administrative Complex, with Prof. B. Kilangla Jamir, Vice-Chancellor in-charge, as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Kilangla Jamir asserted that mother language is a crucial aspect of one’s identity. Emphasising the need to preserve and promote mother languages, she urged individuals to strengthen their languages, improvising where required, to develop their identities. She also encouraged the younger generation to take their mother languages to a higher level.
Delivering a well-structured and researched lecture, Dr. Neizo Puro of the Department of Botany, Nagaland University, exhorted participants to save and propagate their mother languages by tracing their history and development. He said, “Though there is strive in family and nation, when we can speak our own dialect or language, it is easier to maintain oneness, peace and harmony.” Dr. Puro also spoke on respecting linguistic diversity, promoting understanding among communities, and using the digital world to enhance mother languages.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Rumi Dhar, Department of Law. A dance performance by campus children and a tribal-language song presented by T. Bethel Kinimi added colour to the event. Faculty members, officers, staff, research scholars, and students attended the programme, which concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Sentijungla of the Department of Anthropology, Nagaland University.
