Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir has urged the Government of India to consider upgrading Kohima Medical College into a premier central institute on the lines of AIIMS or the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.

Highlighting the significance of the medical college as Nagaland’s first, which commenced operations in September 2023 with an intake capacity of 100 students, Jamir described its establishment as a historic step in strengthening the State’s healthcare infrastructure.

He stated that despite this milestone, there remains a strong need for enhanced institutional capacity, advanced medical facilities, and expanded academic and research opportunities. According to him, upgradation to a central institute or an AIIMS-level institution would significantly improve healthcare delivery not only in Nagaland but across the North Eastern region.

Jamir further pointed out that such an initiative would help address the shortage of specialised medical services, reduce dependence on other states for advanced treatment, and create greater opportunities for local students in medical education and employment.

Calling upon the Government of India to take prompt and positive steps, the MP said that granting central institute status or upgrading the college to AIIMS-level would ensure equitable healthcare development and meet the long-standing aspirations of the people of Nagaland.
