As the date for the Mungmung festival of the Sangtam Nagas approaches, the five areas of Kiphire – Sitimi, Longmatra, Seyochung, Kiphire, and Amahator – have united to construct a Kuying (Morung) at the Public Ground for the grand celebration. The Mungmung festival is the main festival of the Sangtam Nagas, celebrated before the harvest to seek blessings.

Set for September 3 and 4, the festival promises to be a unique and deeply meaningful experience for the Sangtam Nagas. Island Peace Yangthsaba, Joint Secretary of USLP, HQ, Kiphire, said that Mungmung Festival 2024 will be a distinctive celebration, focusing deeply on the traditions and culture of the Sangtam people. “This year, there will be no modern tools or activities—only cultural performances and practices,” he said.

Yangthsaba also noted that, unlike previous years, there will be no mass cultural participation. “This change is intended to allow the public to fully enjoy and understand each specific activity, as ample time will be given for each performance,” he said. Additionally, translations of every performance and song will be provided during the event.

Different areas will have their own Kuying (Morung) to showcase their distinct culture and traditions. The upcoming Mungmung Festival is organized by the United Sangtam Likhüm Pümji in collaboration with the Government of Nagaland and Nagaland Tourism. The festival will be celebrated as a mini Hornbill festival, showcasing the tribe’s traditions, music, dance, and art.

Special guests for this year’s festival will include the President of ENPO and the DC of Kiphire. This step, according to an update received here, emphasizes unity and aims to strengthen bonds within ENPO and with neighboring tribes. In this regard, invitations have also been extended to all tribal leaders under ENPO and to the leaders of the neighboring Pochury tribe.

“This festival is not merely for celebration but is aimed at fostering unity within ENPO and the surrounding communities. Together, let us bridge the gaps and come together in the spirit of unity through this festival,” the update said.
