In January 2024, Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer, whose CEO received the prestigious Padma Bhushan this year, signed a Mandarin-language education project memorandum of understanding (MoU) with four Indian universities. This initiative aims to deepen industry-academia-government ties, enhance employment prospects for Indian students, and meet the company’s talent needs in India. The MoU was signed with Assam Don Bosco University, Shiv Nadar University, VEL TECH, and Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, with the support of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC).

Under this project, Foxconn will sponsor relevant subsidies for Mandarin teaching and learning. Additionally, the company will give priority consideration for employment opportunities to Mandarin learners from the participating institutions. Arentsungla Kichu, a Naga student from Mokokchung and an ADBU alumna, is the first Mandarin learner hired by Foxconn through this initiative.

Kichu began her Mandarin studies in 2020 when the Mandarin program was launched at ADBU with the arrival of Mandarin lecturer Ms. Kuei-Mi LI from Taiwan. In 2022, she was awarded the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, allowing her to spend six months immersed in Taiwan’s language, culture, and lifestyle.

With a recommendation from Ms. LI, Kichu received an interview invitation from Foxconn. After a rigorous selection process involving multiple rounds of interviews and tests, she secured a position with the company. Reflecting on her journey, Kichu expressed gratitude for her Mandarin teacher’s support and highlighted the importance of language skills in securing the job.

“I was seeking a job that would allow me to use my Mandarin skills while also giving me the opportunity to learn more. Even though the interview process was time-consuming, I learned something new from each one and got better for the following round. I sincerely appreciate Kuei-Mi, my Mandarin instructor, who inspired and supported me all through the interview process. I was overwhelmed with joy and felt accomplished when I finally received the offer letter,” Kichu said.

“I’m very thrilled to be working with Foxconn and intend to make a significant impact in the years to come. I believe that working for one of the world’s top companies like Foxconn will help me expand my knowledge and skill set, which will be very beneficial for my future professional endeavors. The value of learning Mandarin and all of its advantages are evident. My ability to speak Mandarin has come in handy during the company’s interviews. I wouldn’t have received this job opportunity if it weren’t for the language. Mandarin proficiency can lead to a variety of career prospects,” she added.

This milestone underscores the growing academic and professional ties between India and Taiwan, facilitated by initiatives like the Mandarin-language education project and scholarships offered by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. These efforts aim to equip students with valuable language skills and enhance their employability in a global job market.
