Nagaland accords State Funeral to veteran leader Imkong L Imchen

Nagaland bade an emotional farewell to late Imkong L Imchen, Advisor, Information & Public Relations and Soil & Water Conservation as the State accorded a State Funeral in recognition of his distinguished service and contributions to the people at his official residence, Old Ministers’ hill, Kohima on Wednesday, November 12.

Leaders, colleagues, family members, and well-wishers gathered to pay their final respects to the veteran leader, remembering him as a Statesman of integrity, vision, and deep commitment to the welfare of the Naga people.

In his message, Chief Minister, Dr Neiphiu Rio described Lt. Imkong L Imchen as a man of clear mind, trustworthy, upright and a seasoned politician, who was never afraid to speak out his mind. His involvement in the public platform began much before he entered into politics because of his conviction and determination to be a public servant. He was actively involved in student bodies at a very young age before actively participating in State politics.

Rio recalled how he worked with Imkong for decades in the service of the people, and how his trust in him was built over the years of their association. Imkong was a close confidante of him because of which he was allocated key portfolios like Rural Development, Education, Home, Health & Family Welfare, etc. in the successive governments.

Despite political instability, Imkong was a survivor and ably handled the crisis in the State politics irrespective of ups and downs in the affairs of the government, Rio said.

Rio condoled his loss and lamented that the legacy and good deeds left by him will always be cherished in our hearts.

Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Sharingain Longkumer, described Late Imkong Imchen as “a man of few words but immense depth, known for his strong vocabulary, mature reasoning, and unwavering dedication to the service of the people.”

He said, Late Imkong Imchen was a man deeply loved and respected by his people and a firm taskmaster and an embodiment of values and principles that continue to guide us today. A towering political figure, his life was marked by a steadfast commitment to public service, community leadership, and the upliftment of society, he added.

Recalling his remarkable journey from a student leader to holding multiple portfolios in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly including Home, Health and Family Welfare, Education, and Environment the Speaker said Lt. Imchen exemplified integrity, wisdom, and selfless devotion to the welfare of the Naga people.

“His legacy of compassionate and visionary service will continue to inspire generations to come,” the Speaker added. Speaker said that beyond politics, he was also a grounded organizational leader who worked tirelessly for the unity and progress of our people.

Chief Secretary, Sentiyanger Imchen, IAS who spoke on behalf of the State government said that Imkong L Imchen displayed remarkable leadership qualities and a strong sense of public duty. As a student leader, he served as Vice president and president of Ao Students’ Conference, and as General Secretary of the Naga Students’ Federation.

He also served as President of Ao Senden and Ongpangkong Range Council working tirelessly for social harmony, community empowerment and the preservation of Naga identity and values.

He was one of the meticulous politicians, always thorough with all cabinet memos and ensuring that all departments were kept on their toes, reflecting his disciplined approach and high standards of governance. He was a multi- faceted personality- a fearless leader, a scholar and tireless social worker.

A seasoned politician and one of the senior most legislators of the State. He was known for his fierce independence, outspoken honesty and unwavering courage.

In his passing, the State has lost not just a veteran leader but a voice of reason, a man of principle and a statesman whose life embodied the spirit of service.

Minister of Tourism and Higher Education, Temjen Imna Along described Lt. Imkong as a leader who devoted his whole life for public service be it in social or political. He was a leader who was highly respected, regarded and loved by all. He brought positive changes and touched countless lives with his service. His sudden and untimely passing left an impeccable sign of leadership, he added.

Secretary, Soil & Water Conservation, Sarita Yadav, IAS delivering the condolence message remembered Late Imchen as a man of dignity, a towering figure of our time, and a down-to earth human inspiration. She also remarked that his life stands as a testament to how one man, through sheer courage and faith, can rise to challenges and make a difference in the lives of many.

She also paid high tribute to Late Imchen’s selfless service, firm conviction, and unwavering commitment to uplifting and strengthening the department in every possible way. She added that his principles and the dedicated workforce that upheld them were decisive in bringing significant progress and development to the department.

She stated that Late Imkong Imchen took key initiatives in promoting resource conservation, sustainable practices, and community-based soil and water management which reflects his enduring passion for environmental stewardship and grassroots development.

Speaking on behalf of the Department, Director of Information & Public Relations, Dzüvinuo Theünuo said that Late Imkong L. Imchen was a veteran statesman and one of the senior most members among the State’s legislators, a leader of stature whose long years of public service were marked by commitment and wisdom.

She said, as the Advisor to the Department of IPR, Late Imchen took a deep and personal interest in its functioning and constantly encouraged the Department to evolve with the changing media landscape to strengthen its role as the voice and communication arm of the Government. His vision for institutional discipline, professionalism and the use of modern communication tools guided many of the Department’s ongoing reforms and initiatives.

She stated that Lt. Imkong’s frequent visits, active participation in reviews and guidance to the officers and staff reflected his genuine concern for the Department’s growth and efficiency. Late Imchen’s mentorship and warm accessibility earned him the respect and affection of all who had the privilege to work with him. His sudden and untimely demise has deprived us of the guidance and encouragement needed to carve a way forward, in spite of challenging circumstances, she added.

President of Naga Students’ Federation Mteisuding Zeliang described late Imkong Imchen as “a towering figure whose life was marked by unwavering dedication, visionary leadership, and a deep sense of commitment to the welfare of the Naga people.”

He said that Imchen’s journey from a student leader to a seasoned statesman reflected his lifelong pursuit of justice and the collective aspirations of the Naga people.

Recalling his tenure as the General Secretary of the NSF, Zeliang noted that late Imkong played a pivotal role in strengthening the foundation of the student movement. “He was not only a leader but also a mentor and an inspiration to countless Naga youths whose lives were touched by his humility and wisdom,” Zeliang added.

Orenthung Lotha, Commissioner & Secretary, IPR and Cooperation was the chairperson of the State Funeral program. Invocation was pronounced by Temjen Sempo, Pastor, Kohima Ao Baptist Arogo. Representative from Mangmentong Senso Telongjen Kohima also shared words of remembrance for the late leader. President Kohima Ao Telongjem, T. Chubayanger also spoke on behalf of the Ao community residing in Kohima.

A touching hymn, “Oh, How He Loves,” and a moment titled “Time for the Family” added a heartfelt note to the occasion. The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths in honour of the departed soul.

The Word of God and Benediction was delivered by Rev. Sentisashi Aier, Senior Pastor, Kohima Ao Baptist Arogo. The event closed with the Guard of Honour in honour of Lt. Imkong L. Imchen was accorded by 10 NAP (Bn) IR, marking a fitting tribute to a life of service and dedication. (DIPR)

Prime Minister condoles demise of Imkong L Imchen

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Imkong L Imchen, a senior leader from Nagaland.

In his message, the Prime Minister said that Imchen will be remembered for his outstanding contribution to Nagaland’s development. He noted that Imchen was active in public life for many years and remained deeply committed to the welfare of tribal communities. His legislative and ministerial tenures, Modi said, will be fondly remembered.

“He also contributed towards strengthening the BJP in Nagaland. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this sad hour,” the Prime Minister added.

Wokha pays last respects as Imchen’s cortege travels from Kohima to Mokokchung

A brief condolence gathering was organized in honour of the departed leader Imkong L Imchen at Tsumang A, Police Point, Wokha, as his cortege traveled from Kohima to Mokokchung on Wednesday following the state funeral held in Kohima held earlier in the day.

Representatives from the District Administration, Lotha Hoho, Ao Union Wokha Town, Ao Baptist Arogo Wokha, Lotha Students’ Union, and the BJP Wokha District paid their respects and offered tributes to Late Imchen. The program was led by Yihamo Patton, Cultural Sect, Lotha Hoho, Oking Wokha.

Lirhonthung E Kithan, President of the Lotha Students’ Union (LSU), speaking to MT, described Imkong L. Imchen as a distinguished leader. He said the LSU honours his legacy as a student leader who had served as President of the Ao Students’ Conference and General Secretary the Naga Students’ Federation before entering state politics.

Mokokchung bids farewell to Late Imkong L Imchen as mortal remains arrive home
The mortal remains of senior legislator Late Imkong L Imchen reached his hometown Mokokchung on Wednesday evening following the State Funeral held earlier in Kohima.

A farewell program was organized in Mokokchung town by Ao Senden, after which his mortal remains were taken to his private residence at Mongsenbai Ward, Mokokchung. The cortege then proceeded to his native village, Mangmetong, the same evening.

The final funeral rites will be conducted at Mangmetong village at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, where Late Imkong L Imchen will be laid to rest.

The Ao Senden, Watsü Mungdang, AKM, AWUMT, family members, and Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton spoke at the farewell program held at Police Point, Mokokchung. Several organizations also paid their tributes by laying wreaths.

Hundreds from all walks of life attended the farewell program. A number of political leaders and party workers also attended the program.

Eulogy of an Achini
Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP legislator Y. Patton, speaking at the grand farewell program organized by the Ao Senden in Mokokchung town Wednesday evening, said that Imkong L Imchen was his “Achini,” a Lotha Naga term for “best friend.” Patton said that he and Imchen always called each other “Achini” and never by name. He shared that their friendship dated back to their college days in Shillong during the late 1970s. Both were elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly five times each.

Patton eulogized Imchen as a confidante, a brave leader who never wavered, and a trusted friend. He also recalled how they often humored each other for speaking on issues without restraint.

Becoming emotional as he recounted their last journey together in October, Patton offered words of comfort to the bereaved family, assuring them that he would always be there for them.

He also read out a condolence message on behalf of the BJP Nagaland and laid a wreath as a mark of respect. Almost all BJP legislators in Nagaland, along with top party functionaries led by the State BJP president, accompanied Patton in Imchen’s cortege. They will also be attending the final funeral service in Mangmetong tomorrow.
