A third-year resident doctor from Nagaland posted at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Gorakhpur has alleged that she was subjected to racial slurs, stalking and physical assault by three unidentified men near the institute on Sunday evening.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Gorakhpur, Kaustubh, confirmed that a case has been registered at the AIIMS police station under relevant sections. However, he did not disclose the specific provisions invoked in the FIR, PTI reported.

“CCTV footage has helped identify a motorcycle linked to the accused. Four police teams have been formed to track them down,” the SSP said, adding that strict action would be taken once the suspects are apprehended.

According to the complaint, the doctor, who is specialising in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, was returning to the campus at around 8 pm when the accused allegedly followed her for over 1.5 kilometres before accosting her near the institute’s Gate No. 2.

The complaint stated that the three men followed her while hurling obscene remarks and racial slurs. One of the accused allegedly removed his shirt in an attempt to intimidate her, while another reportedly touched her inappropriately. The doctor raised an alarm, prompting the trio to flee the scene.

The National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS and INIs (NAFORD) highlighted the incident on social media, expressing “deep shock, humiliation and trauma” faced by the resident. In its post, the federation alleged that the men stared, laughed and made racially discriminatory comments targeting her identity as a woman from the Northeast before allegedly stalking her towards the AIIMS campus.

The incident comes days after another reported case of alleged racial abuse involving three women from Arunachal Pradesh in New Delhi, in which police registered an FIR at Malviya Nagar Police Station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. (With PTI inputs)
