The first State Judo Championship of Nagaland got underway at Eden Academy, Mokokchung, on September 10, bringing together 472 participants from nine districts for the three-day championship, which will continue till September 12.
Organised by the Nagaland Judo Association, the championship has participation from Zunheboto, Phek, Kohima, Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Tuensang, Meluri, Mon and Mokokchung.
Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, attended the championship as the special guest. Acknowledging the challenges involved in organising and sustaining such a tournament, he encouraged the Nagaland Judo Association to make the championship a continuous event.
Verma also emphasised the importance of physical activity in schools and encouraged educational institutions to make physical activity compulsory for students. Noting that Nagaland has been continuing its focus on sports, he stressed the need to create an ecosystem where sports can flourish and athletes can develop.
Member of Parliament Supongmeren Jamir, who was the Guest of Honour, could not attend the program. His greetings were conveyed at the event by Temsu, General Secretary of the Mokokchung District Congress Committee.
The championship is being held from September 10 to 12 at Eden Academy, Mokokchung.
