An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer in Nagaland has made headlines as the only Indian selected among 40 police officers under 40 for the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) 40 Under 40 award for 2024. The award recognizes rising leaders in law enforcement worldwide, and this year, the honor goes to Pritpal Kaur, a dentist-turned-policewoman.

Pritpal Kaur

Pritpal Kaur, 39, originally from Haryana, currently serves as the superintendent of police for Phek district in Nagaland. Her selection is a remarkable achievement, showcasing her dedication and service to her community and the law enforcement profession. The IACP, a prestigious not-for-profit organization headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, praised Kaur, stating, “You are part of an incredibly talented, accomplished, and dedicated group of individuals who demonstrate leadership and exemplify a deep commitment to the profession.”

Kaur, a 2016 batch IPS officer, is also known for her social contributions. Her diverse efforts include treating patients with dental issues, counseling drug users, mentoring youth for competitive exams such as civil services, and assisting school dropouts. Furthermore, she facilitates training and procurement of modern tools for farmers, encourages innovation and entrepreneurship, and educates rural women on female hygiene.

The IACP highlighted Kaur’s long-standing passion for education, stating, “Since childhood, SP Kaur has carried a passion for spreading education, and throughout her career she has helped resolve conflicts and strengthen communities across India.” Her innovative projects, including “Fighting Drugs with Education and Livelihood” and “Not Guns but Machines,” aim to empower individuals by teaching them to apply their skills in creating low-cost machines like electric bicycles and dryers.

Kaur has also made significant strides in fostering peace and progress along international borders. Her negotiation skills have been instrumental in averting border clashes and land disputes, while her anti-drug initiatives have provided treatment, counseling, and rehabilitation to hundreds battling addiction.

In recognition of her outstanding service, Kaur has received several prestigious awards, including the International Inspiration Women Award 2023, the Skoch Gold Award 2023, the DGP Disc Award, the Women Power India Award 2023, and the Global Women Leader Award 2024.

Perhaps her most meaningful accolade came during her service in eastern Nagaland, where local tribespeople affectionately bestowed upon her the name “Themshao Lam.” This moniker, honoring a grandmother known for her sacrifices to protect her tribe, reflects the profound impact Kaur has made in her community.
