The Khonoma Youth Organisation (KYO) has reiterated that hunting within Khonoma jurisdiction remains strictly prohibited and warned that violators will face stringent penalties, including fines and possible legal action under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
In a press release, KYO president Kevisetuo Savino said that despite the existing ban, some unscrupulous individuals have continued hunting in the Khonoma area.
The organisation informed that several persons have already been caught violating the ban and penalties have been imposed. It also noted that picnickers carrying air guns were recently detected and cautioned against repeating such acts.
KYO stated that hunting of wildlife and birds in any form within Khonoma jurisdiction is strictly prohibited.
The organisation further clarified that wildlife or birds hunted outside Khonoma jurisdiction will also not be allowed to be brought into the village without prior permission.
According to the organisation, anyone caught hunting within the village jurisdiction will be fined Rs 40,000 per individual. In cases involving outsiders, any Khonoma citizen accompanying them will also face an additional equal penalty.
KYO also informed that arms and equipment used for hunting and confiscated by its Action Committee may be reclaimed within 10 days only upon payment of a Rs 5,000 fine. After the expiry of the 10-day period, no claims will be entertained.
Reaffirming its long-standing conservation stance, the organisation warned that failure to comply with the rules would invite severe repercussions, including prosecution under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
