Nagaland took a historic step in neonatal healthcare on February 27 with the inauguration of the State Newborn Resource Centre (SNRC) at Naga Hospital, Kohima. The facility aims to reduce infant mortality and provide advanced care for the State’s most vulnerable newborns.
Dr Mereninla Senlem, Principal Director of Health & Family Welfare, inaugurated the centre, calling it a landmark initiative for improving newborn health outcomes across Nagaland.
The SNRC will serve as the apex facility for neonatal care, integrating upgraded Special Newborn Care Units and advanced clinical infrastructure. By establishing a dedicated centre separate from the main Intensive Care Unit, officials say the facility will enhance infection control and improve survival chances for critically ill newborns.
The SNRC will also act as a training and mentoring hub for healthcare professionals, supporting all district-level newborn care units across the State. Programs will focus on standardizing quality newborn care, capacity building, and structured mentoring through a hub-and-spoke model.
The State acknowledged the support of Toyota Kirloskar, which contributed critical biomedical equipment, and the SELCO Foundation, which will help solarize the facility to ensure sustainable healthcare infrastructure.
