Nagaland has received a total of Rs 717.71 crore in Central share funds under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) over the last eleven years, covering both rural and urban sanitation schemes, according to data released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Under the rural sanitation scheme Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G), Nagaland has been allocated Rs 505.34 crore from 2014-15 to 2024-25. These funds, allocated annually based on the state’s projected needs and performance, have supported efforts to improve sanitation infrastructure and services across rural areas of the state.
Nagaland was allocated Rs 42.63 cr in 2014-15, Rs 34.38 cr in 2015-16, Rs 64.12 cr in 2016-17, Rs 71.41 cr in 2017-18, Rs 119.86 cr in 2018-19, Rs 56.08 cr in 2019-20, Rs 57.80 cr in 2020-21, Rs 18.02 cr in 2021-22, Rs 39.44 cr in 2022-23, Rs 31.07 cr in 2023-24 and Rs 27.59 in 2024-25.
In the urban sanitation sector, Nagaland received Rs 212.37 crore under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) schemes. This includes Rs 53.49 crore allocated during the initial SBM-U phase (2014-2021) and Rs 158.88 crore under SBM-U 2.0 (2021-2026). Unlike SBM-G, SBM-U funds are allocated for the entire mission period and released on demand based on approvals by State Level Technical Committees, enabling timely implementation of urban sanitation projects such as waste management and sewerage systems.
Sanitation remains a State subject, with SBM schemes being implemented by State Governments in coordination with the Central government. The financial support from the Centre aims to empower states like Nagaland to enhance sanitation coverage, contributing to public health and environmental sustainability.
At the national level, over Rs 1.22 lakh crore has been allocated to States and Union Territories under SBM-G, while SBM-U and SBM-U 2.0 have collectively received substantial allocations to improve urban sanitation infrastructure. Major beneficiaries include Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, along with Northeastern states such as Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
