The State Seed Sub-Committee on Tuesday released seven new rice varieties developed for Nagaland’s agro-climatic conditions at a meeting held at the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region.
The varieties, named Nagaland Hornbill Gold, Patkai Pearl, Sekrenyi-lha, Tokhvü-tssok, Moatsü-tsük, Ahuna-khi and Aoleang-tahwan, were developed through the combined efforts of ICAR, the state Agriculture Department and Krishi Vigyan Kendras.
Speaking at the event, MLA and Advisor for Agriculture Mhathung Yanthan described the release as a significant milestone. “This remarkable achievement made possible through the collaborative efforts of ICAR RC for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Agriculture Department and our Krishi Vigyan Kendras marks a significant milestone in strengthening our agricultural sector and advancing towards greater food sovereignty,” he said.
He noted that the varieties are suited to local conditions and offer higher yields, improved grain quality, shorter duration and better resistance to pests and diseases. “These varieties have been specifically developed for our unique agro-climatic conditions and hold immense promise in terms of higher yields, superior grain quality, shorter duration and improved resistance to pests and diseases,” he said, adding that they will contribute to enhancing both the productivity and livelihoods of farmers as well as a self-reliant agricultural future.
According to reports, 990 breeding lines were evaluated, with 30 shortlisted before arriving at the final seven varieties after over nine years of research. The varieties mature in 115 to 120 days and have a productivity potential of 5 to 7 tonnes per hectare.
Yanthan also stressed the need for timely seed multiplication, efficient distribution, and widespread adoption so that the benefits of this innovation reach every farmer across the state.
He also extended congratulations to ”all the scientists, researchers, and stakeholders involved in this commendable accomplishment.”
