The Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB), in collaboration with Kohima Science College Jotsoma (Autonomous), celebrated National Wildlife Week 2024 under the theme “Wildlife Conservation Through Co-existence.” The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and the need for peaceful coexistence with nature.
Dr. Ruokuovikho, chairperson of the program, opened the event by emphasizing the vital role wildlife plays in maintaining the balance of ecosystems. He highlighted the contributions of all species, from majestic birds to aquatic life, urging participants to appreciate the rich biodiversity surrounding them.
Supongnukshi, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) and Member Secretary of NSBB, delivered a talk on “Forestry & Wildlife in Nagaland.” He discussed the challenges of wildlife conservation in the state, including human-wildlife conflicts, and shared examples of successful community-led conservation efforts, such as the Amur falcon protection initiative in Pangti village.
Professor Moasangla, Vice Principal of Kohima Science College, encouraged attendees to act as stewards of conservation, advocating for harmonious coexistence with wildlife.
A panel discussion followed, featuring experts like CCF Supongnukshi, Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Dr. Sevono Seletsu, and Assistant Professor Luiluile Lungalang from the Department of Zoology at Kohima Science College. The panel addressed questions on topics like the Forest Department’s ban on air-guns, wildlife corridors, and research initiatives in forestry. The discussion emphasized community involvement, education, and the importance of reporting distressed wildlife to local authorities.
The event underscored the collective responsibility needed for wildlife conservation in Nagaland and served as an important step in promoting awareness and action for the protection of the region’s biodiversity.
