Recognizing the importance of the discipline of journalism and mass communication, the Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Professor Jagadish K Patnaik urged the department to increase student intake to 20 and proposed the recruitment of additional faculty members, given that the current intake capacity is limited to 10 students.

Speaking at the formal release of the first edition of “MassCom Chronicles,” a newsletter published by the Department of Mass Communication today at the Mass Communication Department, Nagaland University Headquarters Lumami, the Vice Chancellor also suggested renaming the current MCMA department as Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication (MJMC) and initiating a Bachelor’s degree program in Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC). He also stressed exploring the option of dual degree proposed by the National Education Policy.

Professor Patnaik congratulated the department on the release of the inaugural edition of the newsletter, and urged the department to continue publishing the newsletter regularly and encouraged them to strive for excellence.
Prof Patnaik also suggested monthly publication of a tabloid newspaper with a broader outreach beyond the Nagaland University campus. He emphasized the importance of students’ involvement in writing to broaden their perspectives on civil society. Regarding electronic journalism, he advised students to explore platforms like YouTube, urging them to be proactive contributors to society.

He also mentioned the significance of interdisciplinary connections in this field, particularly with sociology and politics, emphasizing its strong association with law. He noted the potential of individuals with degrees in this discipline to pursue various career paths, contingent upon meeting qualifications such as clearing NET.

Furthermore, Patnaik highlighted the richness of Naga society in terms of agriculture, culture, and economy but expressed concern over the underutilization of these resources. He urged students to actively engage in disseminating knowledge and positive ideas to inform society about its potential impact, stating that the University’s success depends on students’ contributions.
