Nagaland’s high internet usage, driven by limited recreational facilities, has raised concerns among officials, who are now stressing the importance of cyber hygiene and safe online practices. Addressing these concerns, the State-Level Awareness Workshop on “Safer Internet Day” was observed at the Directorate of Information Technology & Communication, Kohima, under the global theme “Together for a Better Internet.”

Commissioner & Secretary, Information Technology & Communication, Mohammed Ali Shihab, IAS, in his keynote address, emphasized the need for awareness regarding cyber safety. He pointed out that due to limited recreational facilities, many individuals in Nagaland resort to excessive mobile phone usage, leading to a high rate of internet consumption compared to other states. He urged participants to spread awareness about online safety, responsible internet use, and preventive measures to protect users from cyber threats such as fraud and scams.
State Informatics Officer, NIC,I Lanusangkum Aier, in his introductory remarks, noted that while people today have access to vast amounts of information through the internet, not all of it is beneficial. He cautioned users to differentiate between informative and harmful content, stressing the importance of verifying sources before sharing information. Aier also highlighted the growing prevalence of internet-based frauds and scams, urging responsible and judicial use of online platforms to ensure security.
Director, Information Technology & Communication, Er Sabou Yashu, in his welcome address, stated that Safer Internet Day is observed globally every second Tuesday of February to promote secure and responsible internet usage.
He called upon Heads of Departments (HODs) to take the initiative seriously and act as ambassadors in raising awareness about online safety measures.
A PowerPoint presentation on the “Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) Project” was delivered by Director, NIC (IT), Swedevenuo Natso, providing insights into cybersecurity challenges and best practices for users.
In observance of Safer Internet Day, the NIC Kohima District Centre, under the ISEA Project, organized an awareness workshop at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Kohima, under the theme “Together for a Better Internet” on February 11, 2025.
Speaking at the event, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Kohima, Rhosietho Nguori, NCS, emphasized the importance of responsible internet usage, especially within government offices. He highlighted the risks associated with negligence, which could compromise entire office systems, and urged employees to adhere to cybersecurity protocols. He also reminded the participants that NIC internet usage is monitored by the Cyber Security Cell, India, and stressed the importance of installing antivirus software.
Meanwhile, in Mokokchung, Safer Internet Day was celebrated at the DC Conference Hall under the same theme. The program focused on educating participants about cybercrimes such as fraudulent emails, SMS scams, and voice phishing. The NIC, Mokokchung team encouraged people to report cyber-related crimes using the national helpline number 1930 or by lodging complaints on www.cybercrime.gov.in.

The program in Mokokchung was chaired by Er Lanusenla Lkr, Principal, ICIT, followed by introductory remarks from Er Temsuwathi, Senior Director (IT), NIC, Mokokchung, and a short speech by Temsuchuba, SDO (Civil), Mokokchung.
