A new Forest Beat Office inaugurated at Chen Town under Mon Forest Division is expected to improve access to forest services and strengthen monitoring in a remote area where difficult terrain has long limited outreach.

Minister for Environment, Forests & Climate Change and Village Guards, CL John, who inaugurated the facility on April 21, said the office would serve as a local administrative unit to address grievances, respond to forest-related issues, and help curb illegal activities in the region.

The Chen area, comprising 14 villages and significant forest cover, has faced challenges in accessing forest department services due to distance and terrain. Officials said the new establishment is expected to act as a first point of contact for local communities and support conservation efforts through closer coordination.

Principal Secretary, Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Y. Kikheto Sema, noted that the office would function as a centre for protection and regulation of forest resources and wildlife. He called on local communities to play an active role in conservation, particularly in a region that shares ecological continuity with areas across international borders.

Highlighting the broader context, officials informed that there are 17 Forest Beat Offices across Nagaland, with Mon Forest Division now having three – at Aboi, Longching and Chen – aimed at improving field-level administration and response.

The Minister also referred to ongoing infrastructure challenges in the area, stating that road conditions have been affected by heavy rainfall, though black-topping works are being taken up in phases.

He further informed that Chenloishu and Wangti villages have been approved under the Vibrant Village Program.

Officials said the establishment of the Forest Beat Office is expected to enhance coordination between the department and local institutions, including village councils and traditional bodies, in protecting biodiversity and preventing illegal activities.

The inauguration program was attended by departmental officials and local leaders. The visiting delegation also inspected the Stone Park below Chen Town, which reflects a blend of Konyak traditional art and modern design.
