The Nagaland Police has clarified that while checking for Inner Line Permit (ILP) violations will be conducted across the state from time to time, police personnel are not authorized to impose fines on individuals found without valid ILP documents.

In a public notification, the police emphasized that only Magistrates are empowered by law to impose such penalties. “Police personnel are not authorized to impose any fines for non-possession of ILP papers or valid documents,” the statement read.

The department further urged the public to report any instance of unauthorized fines or harassment by police officials. “If any police personnel [are] found indulging in such practices, the same may be reported to senior officers,” it added.

“Only ‘Magistrates’ can impose fines for ILP violation,” it stated.
