Hints at Congress fighting the ensuing Lok Sabha election in Nagaland
Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) President Supongmeren Jamir on Monday strongly criticized the ruling government of Nagaland, while asserting that there is “nobody to fight for the common people of Nagaland.”

Addressing a press conference at the District Congress Committee Office in Mokokchung, Jamir shed light on the “Clean Election” held earlier this year. He expressed concern over instances where candidates reportedly spent exorbitant amounts, ranging from 20 to 30 crores of rupees during their campaigns. With 60 assembly constituencies and multiple candidates in each, he asserted that the total expenditure surpassed the state’s central budget. Jamir asked how anyone could effectively represent and fight for the common people under such circumstances.
The NPCC delegation led by its President was in Mokokchung as part of the second leg of the party’s statewide tour. The NPCC President also said that it is in touch with the INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) bloc leaders and hinted at fighting the ensuing Lok Sabha election in the state.
Additionally, Jamir took a dig at the ruling government, highlighting the absence of any opposition. He remarked that without a strong opposition, elected members tend to operate in collusion without checks and balances, leaving the common people without a voice.
Jamir stated that the primary purpose of the tour was to draw attention to the challenges faced by the common people and to raise awareness about their rights. Jamir emphasized that it is the people who empower the government, and thus, the government is duty-bound to work for the welfare of its citizens.
Jamir called upon the civil society, churches, and NGOs to step forward and advocate for the people’s rights independently of political affiliations, especially in the absence of a strong opposition.
The NPCC President said that the people of Nagaland want “change” but regretted that prospects of fulfilling the people’s aspiration through the manner in which elections are held was dismal. Jamir then posed a question: “Who is to blame for the plights faced by people at the grassroots? Is it the system, the political parties, or the people?”
Regarding potential candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Jamir revealed that six intending candidates have so far approached the party’s office. However, he stressed the importance of seeking consensus with the grassroots before making any decision, emphasizing Congress’s commitment to representing the people’s interests. Jamir expressed confidence in receiving a positive response from the public at large.
The NPCC had their first tour program starting on 29 August 2023 where they toured four districts: Phek, Kiphire, Noklak, and Tuensang. The next stop is Mon scheduled for 21 September.
During his visit to Mokokchung, it was informed that Jamir and his delegation held meetings with the Congress Party Officials of the District and some civil society organizations of Mokokchung.
Toshipokba and Er Meshenlo Kath, both congress candidates in the last election were also present with the NPCC president.
Great advice! I’ll definitely be implementing some of these tips.
