The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued an alert warning of a potential flash flood risk across low-lying and flood-prone areas of the state as heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, is forecast in the coming days.

According to the advisory, flash floods are likely to affect watersheds and neighbourhoods situated in low-lying areas. The NSDMA noted that surface runoff and water inundation may occur in zones with fully saturated soil, heightening the risk of localized flooding.

“In view of the anticipation of heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning & gusty winds at several places across Nagaland, there is a flash flood risk likely over watersheds & neighbourhoods in the low-lying areas of the State,” the NSDMA said in a statement.

All District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) have been directed to remain on high alert and issue necessary advisories in their respective districts to prevent any untoward incidents. The NSDMA urged the public to avoid vulnerable areas and follow safety advisories promptly.

In case of emergencies, the public is advised to contact the following helplines: State Emergency Operations Centre (toll-free): 1070; ERSS Disaster Management Extension: 112; and Landline: 0370-2291120 / 2291122.
