In the wake of recent incidents involving cybercrime and scam call centres in Punjab, the Naga Students’ Union Punjab (NSUP) has issued a critical advisory and a formal warning to Naga youths and students in the region. The NSUP emphasized the importance of exercising caution and vigilance in all online activities to protect oneself from cybercrimes.
It may be recalled that 45 Naga youths were arrested on May 14 and 15, 2024, when the Punjab Police busted two fake call centers, leading to their detention on non-bailable offenses. The arrested youths are reported to be lodged in Mohali Jail, Punjab. Following this, the Nagaland Chief Minister directed the Advocate General of Nagaland to personally intervene in the issue. The recently elected Lok Sabha MP from Nagaland, Supongmeren Jamir, has also called for prompt intervention by the State Government regarding the reported detainment of 45 Naga youths in connection with a call center scam in Chandigarh.
The NSUP in a press release on Wednesday stated that they would not be responsible for handling any future cases related to cybercrimes. They urged individuals to take proactive measures and to be aware of the risks associated with involvement in scam call centres and similar activities.
“We the Naga Students’ Union Punjab hereby proclaim that in the event of any future occurrences linked to cybercrime, we shall not bear the responsibility of entertaining such cases,” the NSUP president Alelie Keditsu and general secretary Sensen Ilang announced.
The NSUP also directed a plea to Naga individuals employed in call centres and related workplaces in Punjab, urging them to heed warning signs and refrain from participating in illegal activities.
The NSUP called upon individuals to take proactive measures and remain “cognizant of the hazards associated with involvement in scam call centres and similar services.”
The union also urged Naga individuals employed in call centres and related services to remain vigilant and avoid engaging in illicit activities.
Further, the NSUP advised all Naga individuals residing in Punjab to promptly register with the NSUP. It assured that registered members would receive legal aid and various forms of assistance in times of need, while adding that unregistered Naga individuals might not receive the same level of support from the union.
The NSUP reaffirmed its commitment to creating a secure and harmonious environment for all and called for collective cooperation in combating cybercrimes and related fraudulent practices.
