Kohima, 3 May (MTNews): In a bid to address pressing environmental concerns, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus (NUKC), in collaboration with Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB), organized an awareness program under the National Clean Air Programme, themed “Awareness Generation on Mission LiFE Activities.”
The event was held on the 3 May with K HukatoChishi, IFS, Member Secretary of NPCB, as the Keynote Speaker. During his address, the Member Secretary emphasized the fundamental rights of every individual to clean air and water, stressing the importance of collective action in preserving these necessities. He underscored the role of public participation in driving meaningful change and urged attendees to become proactive stewards of the environment.
The awareness presentations, conducted by resource persons from the NPCB Senior Scientific Assistant Olivi Chophy, Yanathung Kithan, Scientist ‘B’ and Rongsenben Longkumer, Junior Scientific Assistant delved into the topics of Ambient Air Pollution in the state, Solid Waste Management, and the introduction of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) respectively.
Chophy highlighted the current air quality status in Nagaland and the harmful effects of air pollution, stating that exposure to polluted air causes respiratory problems even in young children.
Stating that Rs 200 cr environmental compensation was levied on Nagaland by National Green Tribunal (NGT) for negligence of solid waste management in the state (in 2022), Scientist B Yanathung emphasized the importance of waste segregation at source as waste is a responsibility of every citizen and collective effort by the citizens and the government is imperative to ensuring effective solid waste management.
Mission LiFE encourages behavioural changes to create a better environment by choosing sustainable and environmentally conscious choices. Longkumer emphasized that youth play an important role in leading by example as young people are adaptable to change and passionate about bringing change, which can inspire others to follow suit to ensure that the future generation is inheriting a world worth living in.
Earlier, Prof. GT Thong, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, NUKC, delivered the opening remarks and extended a warm welcome to all the participants. The program was chaired by Dr Aokumla Walling, Warden of Lakhai Hostel, and ended with a vote of thanks by Mr Suneplong, MSc 2nd semester, Department of Geology.
