NU Linguistics Dept organizes National Conference on Language and Identity in Northeast India

Kohima, November 17 (MTNews): The Department of Linguistics, Nagaland University in collaboration with the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (CNESPR), Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi kicked-off a two-day National Conference on the theme, “Language and Identity in Northeast India: Emerging trends and Narratives” on 17 November.

The inaugural session was held with keynote speaker Dr RK Debberma, an Assistant Professor TISS, Guwahati Campus and also the Chairperson – Unit for Research and Development, Convenor – Social Protection Office. Dr Debberma spoke on the identities in times of new liberalism, and the history of identity divisions in North-East India. He also highlighted various issues of identities in Northeast India and emphasized on how people fight for autonomy for identity’s sake, citing various accords and agreements that exist in North-East India about identities.

 

The program was chaired by Dr Arenkala Ao, Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics. Dr Pangersenla, Head, Department of Linguistics gave the opening remarks of the conference. Short speeches were delivered by Prof. Buno Liegise, Administrative in-charge, Nagaland University, and Mr Kokho, Assistant Professor, Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

 

Vote of Thanks was delivered by Dr Waikhom Pinky Devi, Department of Linguistics, Nagaland University. The program was attended by professors and research scholars from various Universities from all over the country.
