Meriema, 8 May (MTNews): The inaugural session of a two-week capacity-building program for Young Higher Education Faculty Members in Social Sciences on “Academic and Research Excellence in Higher Education” sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Ministry of Education, Government of India, New Delhi and organized by the Department of Education, Nagaland University, took place on 7 May 2024 at the Ladies Common Room, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema.

Distinguished guests graced the occasion, including Prof Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, who was the Chief Guest of the program; Prof GT Thong, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University, was the Guest of Honour; Prof Jano S Liegise, Dean, School of Humanities and Education, Nagaland University was a special guest; and special invitees from various departments of Nagaland University, Kohima Campus Meriema. The program was chaired by Dr Anu GS, Associate Professor.

The welcome address was delivered by Prof Buno Liegise, Head of the Department of Education. Prof Liegise extended a warm welcome to the esteemed guests, special invitees, and participants, emphasizing the significance of higher education and the transformative potential of NEP 2020 in the educational realm. She underscored the program’s objective to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills and urged them to seize the opportunities it offered.

Prof Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice Chancellor Nagaland University, joining online, encouraged participants to leverage the program entirely. He emphasized the importance of researching traditional knowledge systems aligned with NEP 2020, urging participants to cultivate critical thinking, innovation, and discovery to develop new research methodologies.

Prof Jano Liegise echoed the sentiment, characterizing education as a lifelong journey, particularly in teaching, learning, and research. She urged participants to engage and remain attentive throughout the program actively.

Dr Boyilllapalli Venkata Rao, Associate Professor and CBP Co-course Director, provided a comprehensive overview of the two-week program, which saw participation from 28 individuals, including 7 from outside Nagaland, representing regions such as Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and New Delhi. The program featured 36 sessions led by 24 resource persons.

Addressing the gathering, Prof GT Thong emphasized the program’s role in disseminating the latest advancements in social sciences, refining methodologies, analyzing research data, crafting project proposals, and conducting quality research. He underscored the importance of combating plagiarism as a critical obstacle to educational and national development.

Dr Khotole Khieya, Associate Professor, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all involved and reaffirming the commitment to advancing academic and research excellence in higher education. The inaugural session set a promising tone for the forthcoming weeks, fostering an environment for academic and research excellence in higher education in the country.
