In a landmark step for clean energy infrastructure in the Northeast, ONGC Tripura Power Company Ltd (OTPCL) and Assam Power Development Corporation Ltd have launched a joint venture to develop a 250 MW battery energy storage system in Assam — the first project of its kind in the region, PTI reported.

The advanced battery system will store surplus electricity generated from solar sources during the day and release it during peak demand hours, particularly at night when solar power is unavailable. Officials believe the project will significantly boost energy reliability and maximize solar energy usage across the northeastern states.

“We have floated a joint venture with the Assam Power Development Corporation to set up a 250-MW battery energy system in Assam,” an OTPCL official confirmed. “The technology is new to store solar power through a battery energy system for using it during the peak hours or at night when solar energy generation goes off.”

The project will be developed in phases, reflecting the evolving nature of large-scale battery storage systems in India’s energy sector. Describing the battery system as a kind of “warehouse” for electricity, the official explained, “The power generated from solar sources will be stored in the facility, and later it will be supplied during peak hours or at night.”
