Wokha, 6 May (MTNews): Stating that Wokha District has reported the highest drug users in the state, Deputy Chief Minister and minister in-charge for Home & Border Affairs Y Patton called it a big challenge and urged the student community to play a bigger role in addressing the challenge.
He also asked the general public to report about police personnel under substance abuse during their duty, stating that the state government is taking serious action against them.
The Deputy CM was speaking at the 35th Nyiro Range Students’ Union general conference as chief guest on Saturday when he also said that cell phones have become one of the major challenges among the students and youths. He lamented over the present generation’s addiction to cell phones and advised the students and youths to make use of phones in positive ways for education and information purposes in enhancing their knowledge rather than wasting and spending their valuable time on it.
Expressing joy over the celebration, Patton congratulated the NRSU team. He also acknowledged that the NRSU will celebrate the 50 years of its existence in another two years, and informed the gathering that he wishes to be part of the celebration in the years to come.
Highlighting the duties and responsibilities of students during the event, Patton said that they must focus on their academic results and must have a determination to excel in competitive exams.
Expressing dismay over the imbroglio of the Lotha Baptist church’s issues prevailing in the Lotha community, he invited all individuals to come together in resolving the issue and informed that the four Lotha legislators are working to bring a positive outcome and settle the issue.
He also appealed for the Lotha community to come together and move forward together as one stating that ‘the election is over and we need to collectively come under one roof and work together with forgiving hearts for the greater interest and community development.’
Limasunup Jamir IGB IG Range who accompanied Patton during the NRSU conference said that the police department has initiated in fighting drugs on a war footing where he sought cooperation from all stakeholders. He said that drugs do not do well to our society. He solicited the cooperation of civil society and appreciated the students in fighting drugs while he informed them that addiction in any form and supplying drug substances is a crime.
