At the age of 21, Nagaland’s winger Pursunep Longkumer made his long-awaited debut in the prestigious Hero I- League for Shillong Lajong FC against Rajasthan United FC on Sunday evening at Deccan Arena, Hyderabad.
A historic day for the local lad who was playing in Nagaland last year but got signed by Shillong Lajong FC for his standout performances in the Northeast Olympics 2022. On his debut, he played for 70 minutes before being replaced by F. Syndai. At the end of the final whistle, the team salvaged a point and remained unbeaten in the league in fourth position with 13 points in seven matches.
Speaking to Mokokchung Times, he said his first experience playing in the I-League was absolutely incredible. “Being in the first 11 was a dream come true,” said Longkumer with excitement. The match surpassed his expectations, and he rejoiced in Lajong’s unbeaten record. Looking ahead, the team remains focused on hard work and giving their best in upcoming matches
“Never give up on your dreams and always believe in yourself!” he said to the youngsters.
Longkumer, the 21-year-old talent from Longkong village in Mokokchung district, is on the cusp of realizing his dreams by playing for Shillong Lajong FC in the prestigious Hero I-League. His journey began with an impressive performance in the second division league qualifying round, catching the club’s attention and leading to a two-year contract. Previously, he showcased his skills in the Dr T Ao trophy, making a mark for Dimapur district and earning recognition through standout performances in the Northeast Olympics, which ultimately paved the way for his recruitment by Shillong Lajong FC.
It may be mentioned that the I-League is the men’s second-tier of the Indian football league system. Currently contested by 13 clubs, the winners get promoted to the Indian Super League. The competition was founded in 2007 as the successor to the National Football League, with the first season starting in November 2007.
