Former President Ram Nath Kovind chaired the inaugural meeting of the high-level committee tasked with examining the ‘One Nation One Election’ proposal, which aims to synchronize national, state, and panchayat elections in India.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash C Kashyap, former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, and other committee members attended the meeting. The committee will also explore the feasibility of coordinating local body elections and provide recommendations on the framework and timing for these synchronized elections.

This move follows the government’s establishment of the eight-member committee on September 2 to explore the possibility of simultaneous elections across all levels of government in India.
The practice of simultaneous elections was prevalent until 1967 but subsequently discontinued, and it has been a part of the BJP’s election manifesto since 2014.
