The Rising Peoples’ Party (RPP) has strongly condemned the death threat issued against Mr Rulho by the NSCN-K (Khango) group. The party also condemned the NDPP/BJP coalition for passing the buck to the CFMG/CFSB on the issue.
In a press statement on Sunday, the RPP asserted that various civil society organizations, including youth and business bodies, should not bypass the government in addressing such threats. The party highlighted what it described as the “elephant in the room” — the state government’s failure to maintain law and order. The RPP reminded that maintaining law and order is a State Subject, not the outlook of CFMG/CFSB.
The RPP revisited the history of political alliances in the state, noting that the NPF government, led by Rio, initially came to power in 2003 with the support of certain factions to dislodge the previous SC Jamir ministry.
“After winning the election, Rio’s government implemented a policy of ‘Equi-Closeness’ with all factional groups,” the statement read. At that time, there were only 4-5 factions operational, and this policy, according to the RPP, legitimized their activities and led to the proliferation of factional groups.
The RPP criticized the policy for facilitating the Government of India’s “Divide and Rule” strategy, which contributed to the rise of these factions. “Today, their number stands at 24,” the RPP stated. The party alleged that Rio granted operational freedom to these factions for the past 21 years in exchange for maintaining his power unchallenged.
The RPP condemned the state government for once again passing responsibility to CFMG/CFSB and criticized the Deputy Chief Minister for requesting anti-social elements to cease their activities instead of taking decisive action. “You do not ‘request’ anti-social elements to refrain from their activities – you arrest,” the RPP asserted.
The RPP claimed that the unwillingness of the political leadership to give a free hand to the state police force continues. It further highlighted that the state police is more than capable of tackling extortion issues within a week but “no organization is willing to bell the cat called the state government” today. “Unless this reality is accepted and digested, the Sword of Damocles will continue to swing over our heads,” it said.
