The United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) has submitted an appeal to Rev Dr James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima, through the Principal of Loyola Higher Secondary School, Kiphire, to establish a college in Kiphire to address the educational challenges faced by students.

The USSC highlighted that Kiphire, a remote district located at the easternmost corner of Nagaland, bordering Myanmar, is grappling with a growing demand for higher education. Despite this increasing need, the district currently has only one government college, which is insufficient to accommodate the rising number of students pursuing higher studies.

“There are seven feeding higher secondary schools within the district. Each academic year, thousands of students graduate from these secondary schools, along with others from neighboring districts, and aspire to continue their education, yet only a few get admission locally, leaving the rest to seek outside the district – which is often financially or logistically unfeasible for many families,” it stated.

The USSC urged the establishment of a new college in the Kiphire District Headquarters, with a focus on offering Science and Commerce streams to meet the high demand. The USSC believe that such an institution would not only improve educational standards in the region but also provide students with opportunities closer to home, ensuring a more secure future.
