“Should not be very alarming…” Director General of Assam Rifles on scrapping of FMR

During the commemoration of the 33rd anniversary of Operation Dudhi, Lt General Chandran Pradeep Nair, Director General of Assam Rifles, shed light on the recent decision by the government to scrap the Foreign Military Relations (FMR) agreement, acknowledging the lack of clarity surrounding its details.

“This is a decision taken by the Government and understandably it is for security reasons and the fine print of the FMR being scrapped is still not out… We do not know the details,” stated General Nair.

Acknowledging potential opposition to the decision, General Nair urged patience until the specifics are unveiled. “Surely there might be some oppositions as you see in ground but let the fine print come out. We’ll see what is there in detail and we’ll find ways to handle it. But it should not be very alarming as you all possibly are alluded to,” he added.

The ceremony also marked the 33rd anniversary of Operation Dudhi, a historic milestone in India’s security history, where the 7th Assam Rifles paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of its heroes. Operation Dudhi, conducted in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, on 5 May 1991, remains as the most successful counter-insurgency operation ever undertaken by Indian security forces.

General Nair also addressed the security situation in Manipur, noting a decrease in violence compared to the previous year but expressing concern over the proliferation of weapons among various communities and the increasing polarization within society.
