On October 22, a small flock of Amur Falcons were sighted in the skies of Mokokchung District, marking their annual migration from Siberia to South Africa. These remarkable birds have returned to Nagaland, where Pangti Village, located near the Doyang Reservoir in Wokha District, is celebrated as the ‘Falcon Capital of the World.’
Local wildlife officials reported that the Amur Falcons began arriving in the region between October 6 and 7. “They are still coming in groups and congregating around the annual roosting sites. While giving the raptors a warm welcome, let us all look towards giving them a safe passage as they continue with their brief halt and their onward migration,” stated a wildlife official.
Once threatened by mass hunting, the Amur Falcons now symbolize Nagaland’s impressive conservation success story.
It may be mentioned here that the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung has issued a directive mandating all villages and towns within the district to strictly enforce the ban on the trade and hunting of wild animals and birds, invoking the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
