St. Thomas Catholic Church, Phelungre, observed its Golden Jubilee along with the dedication of its newly constructed church building on December 20, 2025, marking fifty years of Christian faith and growth in the area. The celebration brought together clergy, church members and invited guests to reflect on the journey of the parish and its future mission.
The programme began with the blessing and unveiling of the Golden Jubilee Monolith by Johnny Raungmei, President of the Catholic Association of Nagaland and Joint CEO of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority. The monolith symbolised the faith, sacrifice and commitment of the pioneers who laid the foundation of the parish.
The central event of the celebration was the Dedication and Golden Jubilee Eucharistic Celebration, presided over by Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima. The liturgy commenced with the lighting of fifty Golden Jubilee candles, representing fifty years of God’s faithfulness and the steadfast journey of the Catholic community in Phelungre.
In his homily, Bishop Thoppil reflected on the biblical understanding of jubilee as a time of renewal, repentance and re-dedication, drawing from the Book of Nehemiah. He said that while the new church building stands as a visible sign of God’s presence, the true Church is the community of believers called to live as temples of the Holy Spirit. Emphasising the importance of the Eucharist, he reminded the faithful that it is the source of strength that sustains Christians in faith and witness.
The Bishop acknowledged the dedication of pioneers, priests, religious and lay leaders who nurtured the Church over the past five decades. He urged the community to carry this legacy forward through unity, service and love, beyond tribal and social boundaries.
Following the Eucharistic celebration, a felicitation programme was held during which dignitaries and special invitees were honoured. Bishop Thoppil congratulated John Tsülise on being conferred the IAS title, describing it as a blessing for both the Church and society. He noted that inter-tribal conflicts have often led to missed opportunities and encouraged the faithful to be the salt and light of the world.
P Tsaseto, Head GB of Phelungre, highlighted the completion of the church building within a year as a sign of community cooperation and divine providence. Nagaland Catholic Women Association President Roukouheü Roselyn and Johnny Raungmei also conveyed greetings, calling on the faithful to live out their faith with responsibility and inclusiveness.
