The State Steering Committee for the development of the School Curriculum Frameworks for the Foundational Stage and School Education held its meeting on June 20 at SIEMAT Hall, SCERT, Kohima.
The committee comprises an esteemed group of educationists, administrators, and academic leaders representing the Department of School Education, Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE), Teacher Education Institutions, universities, and SCERT.


The meeting focused on reviewing the draft document and held collaborative discussions toward finalizing the State Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage.

Kevirale-ü Kerhuo, Director of SCERT Nagaland, gave an overview of the work accomplished so far in developing the State Curriculum Frameworks for the Foundational Stage and School Education. She stated that SCERT, being the nodal agency for coordinating this development, had formed a working committee comprising subject experts and officials from the Department of School Education, SCERT, DIETs, NBSE, Nagaland University, Department of Higher Education, Social Welfare, Youth Resources & Sports, and various NGOs.

Several intensive workshops were conducted to review and draft the document, with Azim Premji University, Bangalore playing a key role in shaping the draft.

The Director appreciated the Working Committee for their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts in developing a comprehensive document aimed at transforming the school education system.

A brief overview of the Nagaland ECCE curriculum was presented by Vekutulu Veyie, Senior Lecturer, SCERT.

The newly developed ECCE curriculum is a contextualized framework designed for pre-primary grades. It comprises a four-part document, including Teacher Resource Handbooks.

Veyie also highlighted key takeaways from the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, such as the new 5+3+3+2 curricular structure, a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to education, and an emphasis on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy.

Following this, the draft of the State Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage (SCF-FS), Nagaland—an adaptation of the NCF-FS (2022)—was presented. The SCF-FS focuses on early childhood education, covering ages 3 to 8 and including pre-primary and Classes 1 and 2.

Veyie stated that the SCF-FS aims to provide a strong foundation for learning through multi-level, play- and activity-based approaches that support the optimum development of each child’s full potential.

The State Steering Committee also deliberated on key areas such as assessment, language, and pedagogy.

The meeting was chaired by T. Lima Longkumer, Additional Director, SCERT Nagaland.
