Phek Government College (PGC) hosted a “First Aid Workshop cum Orientation of Youth Red Cross” event on 21st March 2025, in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Phek Branch. The workshop aimed to provide students with essential first aid skills and introduce them to the Youth Red Cross (YRC) initiative.
The event was chaired by Dzuthono Vero, a 4th-semester B.A. student, with a welcome address presented by Dziesetuonuo Linyu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Convenor of the Red Cross Committee (RCC).
Neizote Venuh, Honorary Secretary of IRCS, Phek Branch, was the keynote speaker. He shared insights into the objectives of IRCS and the YRC, encouraging students to actively participate in humanitarian efforts within their communities.
Zhose Vero, a Medical Officer at Phek District Hospital, led the workshop, which focused on “Demonstration of Some Basic First Aid Techniques.” Vero explained the concept of first aid, emphasizing its role in saving lives, preventing further deterioration, and facilitating the transport of victims to healthcare facilities. He also highlighted the importance of ethical considerations such as obtaining consent and ensuring privacy while administering first aid.
The session covered a variety of emergency situations, from assessing personal safety and the condition of the individual to providing assistance and performing first aid. Vero demonstrated critical techniques, including the recovery position for unconscious individuals and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) for those who are unresponsive. He also provided guidance on handling choking, drowning, suffocation, chest pain, wounds, shock, traffic accidents, strokes, animal bites, and burns.
The students engaged actively, participating in CPR and recovery position demonstrations. Several students also registered with the YRC, expressing their interest in volunteering for community-based humanitarian causes.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Vilhoutuonuo Theünuo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences. The workshop proved to be an informative and engaging session, equipping students with valuable skills while fostering a spirit of volunteerism.
